grow lightsApart from proving to be superior grow lights for plants, Light Emitting Diodes (LED) offer numerous benefits over traditional light sources including lower energy consumption, smaller size and greater durability. As a result, LED’s have become increasingly widespread among today’s most practical applications. LED Lights are appearing in everything from brake lights and status indicators to glow sticks and strobe lights.

LED lights are capable of dimming very easily and then lighting up again very quickly. These advanced on and off capabilities allow standard LED’s to achieve full brightness in mere microseconds, making them extremely well suited for traffic signals and emergency vehicle lighting. In fact, the use of LED Lights in recent years has led to vast improvements in drivers’ safety, since they now have more time to react to other vehicle’s brake lights.

hydroponic systemHere’s another wonderful idea for adapting hydroponics to people’s needs.  Again, seniors in nursing homes are mentioned as having great knowledge about gardening and growing, which is all going to waste while they play bingo!

When John Copp, 43, of Kettering was a student at Ohio State University, many of his friends were paraplegic and he became aware of their needs.

“One man loved gardening, but was unable to get into the soil,” said Copp. “This gave me the idea that growing things in water, hydroponics, would be the answer. I have always loved to cook and grow my own produce.”

Copp designed a unit holding cups of potting soil over recycling water enhanced with nutrients. Fluorescent lights add to the energy needed for growth. The result is a six foot high, four foot long, three feet wide wood framed unit holding 20 gallons of re-cycling water he calls Legacy Hydroponic. It’s high enough to accommodate wheelchairs on both open sides.”

in home gardenPropagating plant clones, or cuttings, is not a new concept but the process of aeroponic cloning is not always well known.  In aeroponic propagation, the cultivation of sibling or cloned plants is done using an aeroponic system instead of the more traditional soil-potting.

When setting up an in home garden, aeronponic propgation might sound like something you may be interested in.  Here are some basic steps to follow to start your own aeroponic cloning operation:

• Select a healthy branch from the parent plant with several clusters of leaves.
• Cut off a piece of the branch leaving at least 2 leaf nodes intact.
• Remove the largest few leaves as they can be hard for a rootless plant to maintain in the early stages.
• Then remove all branches and leaves apart from the top 2 sets. Make sure they are within close proximity to the aeroponic fogger and aeroponic mister.
• You are now well on your way to procuring your first crop of cloned plants.

indoor gardeningOften, home hydroponics gardeners miscalculate how much space is needed to produce the quantity of plant material they hope for. It will depend on which crops you intend to grow but the space must be large enough for the plants, reservoir, high intensity lights, ventilation fans, exhaust fans, electrical wiring and more. Certainly, there are very efficient hydroponics systems that fit on a counter-top but realistically, the smallest practical hydroponics garden will be the size of a clothes closet.

Hudro Huts, or grow tents, are about the size of a clothes closet. They are lightproof enclosures designed specifically for an indoor hydroponics garden. A Hydro Hut grow tentg can be erected anywhere there is sufficient space.   Made from 100% lightproof material, it will normally have a highly reflective lining with access holes for intake, exhaust fans and lightproof vents for good air circulation.

hydroponic systemOnce you’ve grow your herbs in your hydroponic system, you will want to dry some untill the next batch is ready.  Imagine sitting around the table with your family on a cold winter night, with the smell of your favorite herbs steaming out from your favorite dish that you so lovingly prepared. Not only that but dried herbs look very appealing hang in in your kitchen or the pantry.

Herbs that contain high moisture can be a bit more difficult to dry but herbs such as bay, dill, thyme, marjoram, summer savory, sage, basil and oregano are just a few that lend themselves to drying.

Herb plants that are going to be harvested should be harvested in the early morning, in this way they will not have extended much energy. Also you need to gather them just before they go into bloom and they will be in their best condition to produce great dried herbs.

in home gardenIndoor gardening can brighten up the drudgery of long northern winters, bringing the delight of fresh tomatoes, peppers, greens, or herbs in the middle of the worst weather.

This can be done by setting up your own hydroponic in home  garden. The advantages are numerous compared to soil based gardening.  For instance, you don’t need to purchase any expensive pesticides. The majority of pests are attracted to soil so they have no interest in your hydroponic plants.

Indoor hydroponic gardens costs are around 20% lower than traditional gardening after your initial set up and you will be able to fit more plants in a smaller area. Your plants will grow larger in most cases because the roots don’t expand as much in hydroponic gardens as they already have all the nutrients they need.  The yield will also be higher.

There is no need to water as they already have all the water they need.  There’s not even a need to weed an indoor hydroponic garden. In fact, all you need to do is pick the fruit or vegetables as you need them.

What are the benefits of growing in hydroponics? Much research and many studies have already established that the hydroponic system of cultivation is more effective and has many advantages. The first advantage is that plants grow much faster under this method as compared to the soil system. The yield of the plants from hydroponics is higher than other methods. Hydroponics also uses much less water and so is perfectly suited to arid areas and wherever there is a shortage of water. Furthermore, there are fewer cases of insects and other pests damaging the crops.

The greatest advantage of this system of cultivation, especially when done in greenhouses, is that there are no growing limitations put on by weather. Outdoors, weather is the huge factor that determines the success of a crop. In the hydroponics system of cultivation, weather has almost no role to play.

One option is to grow an hydroponic indoor herb garden which has the added advantage of allowing you to grow your herbs year round.  There are a couple of ways to grow via hydroponics, one of which you can build your own hydroponic unit, or you can buy a ready made easy to use one.

When starting a home herb garden you also have the choice of starting with seeds, the most common and cheapest way, or buying nursery plants. If you decide to go with nursery plants, try to get them at a reputable nursery that offers a wide variety of plants. This will ensure you’re investing in good stock
